THE FIRST CONTRACTION hits at midnight, waking me out of a sound sleep. The next one comes six minutes later, convincing me that something is going on. I don’t know anything about the process of childbirth, but I’m pretty sure I should do something. I’m just not sure what. It’s 1972, I haven’t been offered any classes or books to read, and I’m single and 19 years old.
Feeling something between excitement and fear, I waddle down the hall to wake the Pedersens, the family I’ve been living with during the last couple months of my pregnancy. Mr. Pedersen and I get dressed and he drives me to Methodist Hospital in Arcadia, CA. I’m naïve and alone, and about to experience what should be an incredibly joyous event. But, maybe not. The contractions are coming so quickly that I’m not sure what to think, or feel.
